Pakistani Stars Speak Out Against Police Brutality

Protests erupted across Pakistan after the detention of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, resulting in eight fatalities and 290 injuries from violent demonstrations on Wednesday. The chaos has caused extensive damage, arson, roadblocks, and fights amongst demonstrators calling for Khan’s release, aggravating the situation further.

Actress Hira Tareen took to Instagram to address the current anarchy in the country, condemning those who use political instability as an opportunity for theft and damage. She highlighted the negative impact on children’s education due to the postponement of Cambridge International Exams and school closures in Punjab and other regions. Tareen urged people to exercise caution, not support terrorists, and refrain from believing in fake news. She called for the safety of families and hoped that Pakistan would emerge from this turmoil stronger.

Zara Noor Abbas shared a video of the Lahore riots, calling it a terrible day for Pakistan. Mariyam Nafees criticised the use of excessive force by the police on demonstrators, expressing her dismay at the brutal treatment of unarmed civilians, including women and children. While she did not support vandalism, Nafees emphasised that protesters should not be held accountable for the damage caused. She questioned the identity of those responsible for such crimes and criticised the government for its response to the situation.
