Vijay Varma Opens Up About Styling Challenges for His Cannes Red Carpet Debut in 2013

Vijay Varma’s Cannes Red Carpet Debut in 2013: Styling Challenges and Personal Triumph

Reflecting on his illustrious ten-year career in the film industry, Vijay Varma reminisces about his first visit to the prestigious Cannes Movies Festival back in 2013. At the time, he attended the festival to support his debut film, “Monsoon Shootout.” Now, returning to Cannes as part of the Indian delegation, Vijay shares a remarkable story of facing challenges in styling for his red carpet appearance due to his then-limited recognition in the industry.

Vijay Varma recently earned widespread acclaim for his performance in Prime Video’s “Dahaad.” Earlier this year, he also graced the Berlin Film Festival, where the series premiered in the Berlinale series section, solidifying his status as a rising star. His breakthrough role as Moeen in Zoya Akhtar’s “Gully Boy” further contributed to his growing popularity.

During an interview with Film Companion at Cannes, the talented actor revealed the obstacles he encountered while preparing for his red carpet debut in 2013. Vijay shared, “When I came here, I bought one jacket from Zara, which I could afford. But for the main event, for two events, they said you have to wear the whole suit. And I went to people, saying, ‘Can some designer come, can some stylist help me out?’ And they said, ‘Who’s Vijay Varma? We don’t want to dress anybody.'”

Undeterred, Vijay managed to secure a tuxedo at the last minute, thanks to a friend who gifted him a Zara suit for the morning photo call. For the red carpet, someone even stitched him a custom-made tuxedo. Despite the challenges, Vijay felt content with his appearance, as he had never been part of such a grand event before. Looking back at the pictures, which were featured on Getty Images and other platforms he couldn’t afford to access at the time, Vijay humorously comments that they give him the resemblance of a “Marwari Johnny Depp.”

This year, Vijay Varma will be joined by esteemed filmmaker Guneet Monga and actors Esha Gupta and Kangabam Tomba as they walk the red carpet representing the Indian delegation at the Cannes Film Festival. As Vijay continues to make a mark in the film industry, his journey serves as an inspiration, reminding aspiring artists that success is attainable through determination, talent, and a touch of resourcefulness.
