Ayesha Omar Opens Up About the Challenges of Addressing ‘Taboo’ Topics
Renowned Pakistani actress Ayesha Omar recently shared her candid experiences in the world of Lollywood, shedding light on controversies and the difficulties artists face when speaking out about sensitive issues. In an exclusive interview with Arab News, the beloved star of “Bulbulay” revealed the challenges associated with discussing sexual harassment and exposing culprits within the industry.
Omar, who entered the entertainment industry at a young age, spoke openly about her personal encounters with sexual harassment and the subsequent consequences she faced. Despite the taboo nature of the issue, she emphasized the importance of raising one’s voice against such misconduct. However, Omar acknowledged the limitations and potential career setbacks that come with addressing controversial matters.
“When you start raising your voice about things that are considered taboo or likely to create controversy, there are a lot of limitations and you do miss out on work,” Omar shared during the interview held in Karachi.
The actress recalled an incident where she was in discussions with a well-known brand for a two-year campaign. However, when she disclosed her traumatic experience, the brand expressed concerns about potential controversies and urged her not to name the person involved. This incident highlighted the industry’s cautious approach towards association with any form of controversy.
Omar also discussed the evolution of her on-screen characters, transitioning from her bubbly and independent role as Khoobsurat in the sitcom “Bulbulay” to portraying more serious roles. One recent significant role was her portrayal of the lead investigator in the film “Kukri,” which depicted the story of Javed Iqbal, a notorious serial killer in Lahore who victimized and murdered over 100 children in the 1990s. Omar expressed her intention to create awareness about such characters and the importance of safeguarding oneself and children from such threats.
While Omar acknowledged the potential for the film to trigger emotional responses and face bans, she remained optimistic that audiences would appreciate the movie’s message. Despite potential editing and censorship, she believed that the film still conveyed its core essence, and the uncensored version had already gained recognition at international film festivals.
In addition to her acting and modeling career, Omar successfully runs her own skincare brand. However, she often experiences burnout due to her demanding schedule. To combat exhaustion, the actress emphasizes the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle and encourages her fans to do the same. Recently, Omar took a much-needed break by announcing a two-week digital detox, during which she traveled to the Barberyn Reef Ayurveda Resort in Sri Lanka to rejuvenate and disconnect from the constant pressures of being in the public eye.
Looking ahead, Omar revealed her involvement in her next film, “Taxali Gate,” which pushed her out of her comfort zone. Set in the inner city of Lahore, specifically in the Shahi Mohalla, formerly known as Heera Mandi (red light district), the film revolves around a rape incident and sheds light on the judicial system.
Ayesha Omar continues to challenge societal norms and use her platform to address taboo subjects, demonstrating her commitment to bringing about positive change within the industry and society at large.
